In 1979 he was admitted to the Bar and joined his father, Dick Learman, in his Bay City Law Firm. He is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and is a Fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. Rick's practice emphasizes tax planning, complex estate and business planning, charitable gifting, business succession planning, commercial law, construction lien matters and real estate. He has been involved with various community organizations and advisory committees, presently including First Presbyterian Church (elder, trustee and building committee chairman), Bay Area Family Y (President 1990-1993) and the Northeastern Michigan Estate Planning Council. Rick has three successful adult children and annually travels to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico to work on a mission construction project with fellow Christians. He enjoys the outdoors; particularly running, hiking, sailing and scuba diving. Skilled in carpentry and pottery, Rick enjoys creative hands-on projects as well as intellectual challenges.
Following graduation from the University of Michigan Law School and service in the U.S. Army (C.I.C.), Dick returned to Bay City in 1954 to practice law with Lloyd Bartlett and David King under the name of Bartlett, King and Learman. William E. Peters and Robert D. Sarow subsequently became Dick’s partners. Dick has served his profession and the community in a variety of ways. He is a past president of the Bay County Bar Association, the Chairman of the Tri-County Hearing Panel #1 of the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board, and has served as a Bay County Case Evaluator. He is a past president of the Bay City YMCA and the Bay City Rotary Club. He was elected a Delta College Trustee and later served as its General Counsel. Although Dick retired from a full-time general civil law practice in 2004, he is available by appointment for consultation and special non-litigation projects. During much of the summer, Dick and his wife Jean can be found enjoying their cottage on the Lake Huron shore north of Harrisville.
